RYA Powerboat Intermediate

This is a two day course that builds on the knowledge and skills from the Powerboat Level 2 course. It covers more advanced boat handling and the theory and practical use of pilotage and passage planning, using GPS as well as traditional navigation methods. Having successfully completed this course you should be confident to take a powerboat on slightly longer and more demanding trips and be able to manoeuvre in tighter confines.

To take this course you should be competent to the standard of RYA Powerboat Level 2 with coastal endorsement. It is strongly recommended that you hold a first aid and VHF/SRC operator's certificate and have knowledge to the level of Day Skipper theory.

What's included?

• You will be coached over the full RYA course syllabus on one of the school owned powerboats.
• Parking – available at Suffolk Yacht Harbour
• All mooring fees, safety equipment, fuel and tuition from one of our experienced RYA instructors.

Course language - English

Our boat – one weekend commencing at 0930 hours on Saturday and again on Sunday afternoon.

Your own boat - There is also the option to take this course on your own powerboat, benefiting from practicing and learning how to handle your own vessel.

RYA Powerboat Intermediate Certificate.

Holders of this certificate wll be able to obtain the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) - this is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. You will often be required to show this when chartering vessels abroad.

If the weather is not looking great or is forecast to be a bit chilly or windy you can hire wet weather gear from us.

Boat preparation

Understands:
The importance of protective clothing and safety equipment
The minimum level of equipment for the boat
Considerations of equipment required for longer passages
Correct stowage of equipment

Boat Handling

Knowledge of:
Effect of waves
Rougher conditions
Awareness of other water users
Mooring stern-to between posts or Med style

Can:
Demonstrate awareness of wind and tide
Mooring alongside, in a marina berth (where available)
Demonstrate the use of an appropriate length kill cord at all times

Pilotage

Can:
Demonstrate a practical application of techniques for pilotage in local waters

Passage Making

Understands:
The need for pre-planning, including advice in the event of having to return at night

Can:
Apply the lessons learnt in the theory section and successfully complete a practical passage
Fix position by traditional and electronic means

Man Overboard

Understands:
Techniques for picking up a man overboard in differing conditions

Can:
Pick up a man overboard
